imbalances that affect airway development and sleep quality.
Myofunctional therapy is a function based therapy program that targets proper nasal breathing, oral resting posture, chewing and swallowing.
With improper habits, these muscle imbalances can affect the growth and development of the airway, facial features, and contribute to poor sleep quality and quantity in children and adults.

The correct way to breathe. Long term mouth breathing can cause abnormal facial development, narrowing of the dental arches and cavities! Nasal breathing is better for our health as it filters the air we breathe, enhances memory, lowers blood pressure, allows us to feel less drowsy and makes learning easier.
Our lips should naturally rest together. This promotes nasal breathing, helps achieve ideal facial growth, and reduces the risk for cavities and gum infection.
The proper position of the tongue is pressed to the roof of the mouth. A weak tongue will lay low in the mouth making it difficult to support and grow the upper jaw, teeth, and facial structures. If the tongue lays low in the mouth it can fall back into the throat causing breathing problems like snoring, sleep apnea, narrow jaw and crooked teeth. It can also cause orthodontic relapse.
When your tongue is in the wrong spot it can lead to an incorrect swallow pattern. This can cause you to swallow with more air and lead to digestive issues like gas, bloating, acid reflux etc. Tongue thrusting is an improper swallow pattern.
Breathing through your mouth or resting with your lips open can change the shape of your face and alter your appearance.
People whose mouth breathing goes untreated may suffer with abnormal facial development.
Mouth breathing disrupts body mechanics and can lead to a number of other symptoms such as:
Therapy that will strengthen mouth muscles and help achieve nasal breathing all day and all night, will be recommended so that proper breathing can be achieved.
Tongue thrust is the habit of pushing the tongue forward between the teeth when swallowing. Normally, the tongue should rest against the hard palate behind the upper front teeth. It’s often caused by thumb sucking, pacifier use, or a tongue tie. Myofunctional therapy can help correct this issue early.
Some common habits such as thumb-sucking, finger sucking and pacifiers are used as forms of self-regulation in children, while nail biting or lip sucking, pen chewing can be common ways to relieve anxiety for adults.
Though these habits may help one relax, they can contribute to changes of the facial muscles and alignment of teeth.
This can cause the tongue to remain in a low-resting position in the mouth which affects breathing, facial development, swallowing, posture and speech.
It is possible to eliminate these habits, and effectively self-regulate, with proper training. This can improve the development and function of mouth, teeth and facial muscles, Oral habit elimination is important for effective orofacial myofunctional therapy.
